Our MGG France colleagues had the opportunity to interview three members of the Overwatch 2 design team who worked in Mantra: Dion Rogers, art director, Alec Dawson, main designer of heroes, and Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie, main narrative designer.
- Two characters in one!
- A story closely linked to Kenyatta's
- Any planned change for the battle pass of season 2?
If you are missing context, you should know that Mantra was revealed this last November 4 during the Overwatch League finals. After this announcement, fans could see their history of origin and understand that he was an Maniac leader who fought for the freedom of his people. is a tank and hero number 36 in the current template.
Two characters in one!
The most information about Mantra is its two forms. Nothing to do with Bastion or D.VA, for example, they can change form. This is something new with a character that will have two skills kits and two multi!
Basically, Mantra will be in maniac form Thanks to a skill, you can change to Nemesis , much stronger (more life) and powerful.
Therefore, a reuse time will be required to change shape and the so-called nemesis seems to have been designed to terrorize enemies. You can launch opponents or make violent shots in the form of Nemesis, while you can attack from the distance in the form of Maniac, but we still do not know more about their skills.
Regarding the composition, we only know that Lucio will be a very good healer for him while Ana will be a constant threat to her dream. Like most tanks with goal 5v5, Mantra can defend its allies but, above all, cause great damage. It doesn't seem to have a shield.
A story closely linked to Kenyatta's
Being omnibus both, we suspected that Kenyatta and Mantra would have a common story but goes much further. The developers revealed that the two characters were close brothers in the past, they spent entire nights arguing on philosophy, but that their different perspective of things kept them separate. As we know, Kenyatta borrowed the voice of wisdom, while Mantra became a key member of the zero sector, working in close collaboration with the claw (Doom fist, Reaper, Shadow).
It would seem that today, Kenyatta and Mantra have a relationship worthy of that of the Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto in X-Men. Old friends with the same will but not using the same methods. Of course, many new lines of voice will be added to the game, and it will be very interesting to play with both characters in the same team to learn more.
If you also want to get more information about Kenyatta, which has never had a similar scene, the team made it clear that Mantra's arrival would allow us to learn more about this Overwatch classic. Unfortunately, we have not had any additional information about the future EVE mode or the potential link between the Lore of the bus and the crisis in London.
Any planned change for the battle pass of season 2?
As a reminder, Mantra will be available from season 2 of Overwatch 2, on December 6. Developers still do not know whether to modify the way to unlock the characters, but they are aware that Criticism of season 1. More information will be revealed soon, such as the new map that will be supposed to accompany the hero.
Regarding the content of the battle pass (the rewards), they prefer to maintain a system similar to season 1 with a light theme (Cyberpunk for S1) and varied rewards to try to please all players.
